What is the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC)?

The Constitution Revision Commission is a group of 37 members who carefully review and propose changes to Florida’s Constitution.The Commission meets for approximately one year, traveling the State of Florida, identifying issues, performing research, and possibly recommending changes to the Constitution. Any amendments proposed by the Commission would be placed on the 2018 General Election ballot. Any amendments placed on the ballot by the Commission would have to secure 60 percent approval by voters to be added to the Constitution.

Who is on the Commission?

Constitution Revision CommissionThe Commission is composed of the Attorney General, fifteen appointees from the Governor, nine appointees from the Florida Senate President, nine appointees from the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, and three appointees from the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. Individuals can have a voice in the appointment process by contacting officials at the Capitol.

What does the CRC do?

Every twenty years, the Constitution Revision Commission is permitted by the Florida Constitution to form a 37 member revision commission for the purpose of reviewing Florida’s Constitution. This group carefully examines the Florida Constitution, holds public hearings throughout the state, and recommend changes to the Constitution for voter consideration.

What can the citizens do?

Citizens are encouraged to be involved with the processes of the CRC. To be an involved citizen, it is important to become educated on Florida’s Constitution and amendment processes. This knowledge will help individuals to suggest and monitor appointments to the CRC, and attend and participate in public hearings. Lastly, citizens can and should, vote on the proposals by the CRC in November 2018.
